Young musicians have turned the freshly-formed Southend Youth Orchestra into a roaring success.

They sprang into action for their latest triumphant concert at Westcliff High School for Boys, featuring favourites like Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony as well as excellent sectional pieces - and interludes from Edwards Hall School Choir.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Children & Learning, Councillor James Courtenay said: “This was a fantastic performance from an orchestra that has been in existence for less than 18 months. I was delighted to be invited to the concert and look forward to seeing them grow and develop in the future.

“The range and depth of talent amongst our young people never ceases to amaze me and I look forward with great anticipation to the next major concert on Thursday 19th July and their appearance at Village Green on Friday 11th July.”

Southend Youth Orchestra, which is going from strength to strength, was founded by Ros Pitcher in September 2012 and  is funded by Southend Music Education Hub which in turn is funded by the Arts Council (England).
This year the orchestra’s string section was coached by a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and performed in a pre-concert performance at the Cliffs Pavilion, Westcliff.

The woodwind section will shortly enjoy the same opportunity and on Thursday 8th May members of Southend Youth Orchestra will perform for the Mayor Making Ceremony at Southend Civic Centre.

They are set to make an impact far beyond Southend too as they look forward to a tour to Salzburg this summer. Before they go they will showcase their skills with a pre-tour performance on Thursday 19th July at a Southend venue to be finalised shortly.

Southend Youth Orchestra gives young musicians a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain an all round musical experience to benefit them both socially and as musicians.

They are trained in all aspects of musicianship, helping them to prepare for GCSE and A Level.

Several members of the orchestra belong to the National Children’s Orchestra and then go on to the National Youth Orchestra.
The Orchestra continues to grow and has space available for new people to step in when talented young members reach the upper age limit of 19 or go on to other orchestras or University.

Christmas Concert 2012

The newly established Southend Youth Orchestra (SYO) performed a sparkling Christmas Concert on Sunday 16th December at 3pm at Belfairs Academy in Highlands Boulevard, Leigh-on-Sea, featuring a range of vibrant orchestral music and festive favourites. Sea Songs "Quick March" - Ralph Vaughan Williams Badinerie From Suite no.2 in B minor - J.S.Bach Tambourin - Gossec Arrival of the Queen of Sheba - Handel Symphony in B minor (Unfinished) 1st Movement - Franz Schubert Finlandia - Sibelius Once in Royal David's City Away in a Manger The Infant King Ding Dong Merrily on High Good King Wenceslas Brass Interlude - Christmas Crackers Arr. John Iveson Past Three A Clock Deck the Hall In the Bleak Midwinter Sleigh Ride - Leroy Anderson Crown Imperial -William Walton O Come All Ye Faithful Conductors Ros Pitcher, Gerald Usher and Chris Bearman. In December the SYO performed its first concert at the Belfairs Academy to great acclaim. Such was the success of the event that the next rehearsal, set for January 13th, already has more than 50 attendees. And therein lies a problem, with which we need some assistance. We need a home for the orchestra that will not only allow for up to 80 musicians to perform on stage, but also provide room for a good audience and secure storage space for the instruments. In return we could provide an agreed number of profile and fund-raising concerts, mentoring opportunities for gifted students and development opportunities for staff and volunteers. If you are interested in helping and think you might have the requirements we would be very interested in speaking with you. In the first instance please contact: Phil Warner, Children & Learning Department, Telephone: 01702 215869; Email: philwarner@southend.gov.uk It arose out of a thrilling coaching day in July this year when members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) led a workshop with talented local young musicians on Sunday, 15th July 2012. The RPO, one of the country's leading orchestras, enabled the youngsters to experience world-class music-making in the hope of encouraging them to audition for the new orchestra. Following the first round of auditions in early September, monthly rehearsals were held at Southend Adult Community College which is the new base for Southend Music Services. Sectional rehearsals were also introduced. The RPO have trained the young musicians on a number of occasions since July and this support will continue. Since then, in just one school term, the students - all of whom are under 19 - have worked together with great success to reach concert standard.

Part of Southend Music Education Hub

Southend gained Music Hub status this year and as such has a priority to deliver clear musical pathways for all children and young people. Southend Youth Orchestra represents the highest part of the music education pyramid. The Southend Youth Training Orchestra is also part of Southend Music Education Hub.
