Friday 6th July 2012, the Olympic Torch arrived in Southend and a choir of 2000 school children and adults from across the Southend area sang a piece of music, specially-commissioned, by internationally acclaimed composer, Tolga Kashif, as the torch stopped on the City Beach.
The piece of music, titled Anthem: Let Your Light Shine is a rousing, epic work that draws on many different music genres, rhythms and styles to represent a global message. It has been composed in response to the sea, the open-air performance site, and the large number of singers taking part by Metal.
There is a vibrant music scene in Southend with many orchestras, wind bands and brass bands, choirs and ensembles. You can join a group and play with other musicians or just have music lessons for strings, brass, wind, percussion instruments. With live music, shows, theatre and concerts. For further details about groups you can join and local events in 2019, see the list on the right.
